The Gulf coast and its islands offer a warmer, calmer alternative to the Andaman side, with a more accessible feel and a broader spread of traveller types. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao form the region’s most popular island chain, each with a distinct character — from resortpolished to party-fuelled to dive-focused. The Gulf’s monsoon season runs offset to the Andaman, making it a reliable option when the west coast is at its wettest.

Quieter corners on the north and west coasts provide a real contrast to the busy Chaweng and Lamai strips. It rewards those who venture beyond the main hubs to find its more charming, less-visited side.

A compact, coral-fringed island that has built its reputation almost entirely on what lies beneath the surface. Affordable dive courses, excellent snorkelling, and a lively community of long-term visitors give the island a distinctive, active energy. Best suited to those happy to spend the majority of their time in, on, or under the sea.

Best known for its Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan has a depth of character that goes well beyond its nightlife reputation. The north and west of the island are home to serene beaches, yoga retreats, and jungle-backed scenery that feels a world away from the chaos of Hat Rin. Timed carefully and explored beyond the party strip, it reveals itself as one of the Gulf’s most varied and rewarding destinations.
