Choeung Ek

Mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were discovered at Choeung Ek after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa filled with over 5,000 human skulls. However, Choeung Ek is just one of around 300 mass graves or ‘killing fields’ where the Khmer Rouge regime executed over one million people as part of their Cambodian genocide between 1975 and 1979.

Located just outside Phnom Penh, the Choeung Ek killing field is a sombre and haunting reminder of Cambodia’s tragic past.
