Central Vietnam is packed with historic sights but also fantastic beaches and national parks. The old town of Hoi An has over 800 preserved Chinese and Japanese buildings from when the town was a thriving port. These are still linked by traffic free cobbled streets. This is a delightful, historic place to wander around. The Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is Hue. Hue is the capital of the Nguyen emperors with many palaces, tombs, temples and the heavily fortified citadel. Hue is not only of great interest but very picturesque, sitting on the banks of the Perfume river.
As a contrast Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, another World Heritage site, is famous for its extensive cave systems. The wildlife is impressive here with 90% primary forest still intact and also interesting for its war history.
