Many tours start in Hanoi which is interesting for its old quarter with French colonial buildings and Chinese influence. It also has a thriving arts scene. Vietnam’s Northeast Highlands provide a wonderful trekking experience amongst the paddy fields and traditional villages. Taking a traditional junk boat tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Bay, or the less visited Lan Ha Bay is a must. Both have the towering limestone islands, up to 100m tall, giving a magical seascape. You can stop off at traditional floating villages, take a kayak amongst the islands and their caves and beaches, or just swim in the emerald waters.
