The Imperial
The Imperial isn’t just one of the best luxury hotels in Delhi. It is also recognised as one of the top hotels in Asia, and has an impressive string of awards to its name. A justifiably institutional landmark in Delhi, there is simply no better place to stay. More than just a luxury hotel, The Imperial is a destination in itself.
What really sets The Imperial apart is its wonderful old world atmosphere and colonial charm. The hotel is housed in a restored Victorian-style building, which was built in the early 1930′s and included in the original plans for the city of New Delhi. As well as providing luxurious accommodation, it also serves as a museum containing an impressive collection of art and other historical items from British India. With a range of sumptuous dining options and exquisite guest areas, you will be spoilt for choice after a packed day of sightseeing in Delhi. Indulge in afternoon tea at the fabulous central atrium and you could almost relive the days of the British Raj. This is colonial style, luxury and sophistication at its very best. The hotel is very conveniently located in a central area of New Delhi, just off Janpath and adjacent to the government-run handicraft emporium. It’s set on eight acres of landscaped grounds, which makes it a peaceful sanctuary in hectic Delhi. It’s also well located for shopping. Delhi airport is approximately 30-45 minutes away by car.
Each floor is dedicated to an artist and original works adorn the walls in the corridors and rooms. The 45 suites are breathtaking – some with an area of 650 sq. ft., making them easily the largest in India and some of the largest in Asia. The most luxurious is the vast Royal Imperial Suite, which has guilt furniture, chandeliers, lofty ceilings, enormous mirrors, inlaid marble floors and Italian sculptures. It encompasses a bedroom with a four-poster bed, a huge seating area, a library of books, a private terrace and its own Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
The Imperial has 4 restaurants and 3 bars, with everything from Italian cuisine and English afternoon tea to South-East Asian food on offer. The Spice Route has been voted as one of the top ten restaurants in the world by Conde Nast. Room service is also available 24 hours a day. My personal favourite is The Verandah of 1911 which overlooks a large expanse of beautiful gardens and has a wonderfully colonial atmosphere. Round the night off with drinks at Patalia Peg and you have the perfect Delhi experience. Simply the best place to stay in New Delhi and one of the best hotel experiences anywhere in the world.
