Malji Ka Kamra

Churu, Rajasthan

Malji Ka Kamra

Located in the historically and artistically rich town of Churu, Malji Ka Kamra is a 100-year-old haveli (mansion) that has been charmingly restored with modern amenities. It was originally used as a guest house for the King of Bikaner, created by Malji Kothari, and was an entertainment house for visiting dignitaries and artists. The haveli is an architectural wonder with a gorgeous turquoise blue structure, akin to a wedding cake, framing the exterior. Delightful fresco paintings of Shekhawati, Italian art influences, European pillared architecture and arches typical of the Mughal era form a part of the interiors.

The property is an art lover’s haven. It serves as the gateway to Shekhawati’s “open art gallery”. The town of Churu is steeped in beautiful historical stories and moments, and guests can discover the various wonders of this town at their own pace and time or through a guided heritage walk organised by the hotel.

Serving typical, yet deliciously homecooked marwadi food, Malji Ka Kamra is a food lover’s delight. Meals are served in the main dining hall that was once used for dance and music performances in the olden days. Food is mainly vegetarian, with some non-vegetarian options also available. Ingredients are entirely fresh and garnered from the local market nearby.

In addition to the heritage walk, activities include interaction with artisans and farmers, jeep safaris into the desert, camel rides, folk music and dance performances, visit to the vegetable and spice market, visit to surrounding schools, visit to Ramgarh or Mahansar, and taking a trip to the Salasar Balaji Temple.

If you have time to venture off the main Rajasthan tourist circuit, Malji Ka Kamra is a great place to explore the famous frescoes and havelis of the Shekhawati region whilst staying in an authentic property oozing character and hospitality. The lovely staff are attentive and will ensure you are comfortable during your stay in this fascinating region. We loved everything about it and recommend highly.
