Lombok is very different from Bali's small country roads and busy streets. You arrive to dual carriageways and open roads. Lombok is an interesting island with a lot to see. It has the benefit of still developing as a tourist destination, so it is not as busy as neighbouring Bali. One of the best parts of Lombok is the Coastline, with beautiful beaches, amazing reefs and stunning islands. It is paradise for divers and snorkelers. The waters are rich with life and the corals vibrant with colour. There are a few clusters of islands called Gili, each one offering you a different experience from simple sandbars you can enjoy watching the sunset on to party islands where you can dance the night away. But the coast isn't all Lombok has to offer, you can enjoy cultural experiences with the native Sasak in local villages, learning about the weaving that makes beautiful fabrics and the traditional Lombok houses on stilts. If you want to go hiking in the Rinjani National Park there are a great selection of trails with hot springs and waterfalls. You can also take on a challenge to climb the huge Mount Rinjani, where you can enjoy a 4 day trek to the top for stunning views of the surrounding area and the impressive crater.
Airport: Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport
Local Language: Bahasa Indonesia and Sasak
Fun Fact: Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia.
Visit lombok if you love white beaches, good surf, snorkeling, diving and relaxing. It is a quieter version of Bali with a twist.
Bau Nyale Festival - Feb/March
A large annual festival that is all about catching sea worms (Nyale) as they arrive on the beaches at this time of year. The story behind the celebration is linked to a princess so beautiful that all the princes caused turmoil in the land fighting over her. She did not want war, so threw herself into the ocean, when guards went to find her they could only find worms and every year they come back at the same time. The worms represent good fortune for those that collect them and bad fortune for those that ignore them. Locals and tourists gather at Kuta Beach (not the Bali one) Seger Beach, and Belanak Beach. There are boat races, performances, dancing and various other celebrations.
Senggigi Festival - July
This annual festival that celebrates Lombok's art and local culture. Held in Senggigi there are parades and displays of dancing and art.
Lombok has great weather pretty much all year averaging a temperature of 28°C. It has a dry season between May and September and a wet season October to April however it is much drier than Bali in the wet season. The tourist destinations can get busy during the dry season and Christmas/New year so better to be avoided unless you are going hiking then it is best to go in the dry season.
For surfers it is great all year round and not very crowded. The waves are bigger but less clean in the dry season and smaller and clean in the wet season.
For divers avoid the wet season as rainfall can reduce visibility by bringing river run off into the ocean.
