A small gem of a tented camp tucked away in an oasis of wilderness close to Kanha Tiger Reserve. The local husband and English wife team, Jehan & Katie, who own and manage the camp, met when they both worked as naturalists in Kanha. Their combined passion for wildlife, nature and each other, has resulted in this wonderful, laid back camp which they built in 2004. It remains their family home for at least part of the year; including their two young children. They are assisted with the running of the camp by a team of naturalists and local people who endeavour to make your experience truly special and memorable. On our visit we were really impressed with the warm, friendly atmosphere, tranquil setting and comfortable tents. This is a place where stories are told, friends are made and life feels good - we loved it!
The six comfortable tents, are spaciously set within a young, indigenous woodland. Simple but stylish, the bedroom is softly draped in white block-printed cotton, and set with a large, comfortable bed, soft pillows and locally-crafted furniture. The spacious bathroom has twin-basins, separate toilet and shower room and a large area to store luggage. For convenience, there are a number of electricity points inside the tent and a hairdryer is also provided. Each tent has its own private, cushioned verandah where you can relax, enjoy the birdlife, bathe in the sun and gaze up at the stars.
Meals are served communally in the main house or on the spacious verandah overlooking the small lake which attracts a variety of birds. Lunches are light salads using fresh local ingredients and dinners are prepared in the style of a traditional Indian home. Continental food can also be provided on request.
In addition to jeep safaris, other activities include nature walks, cycle rides, village visits and weekly market excursions. The local community are a central element to the ethos of Shergarh and you will have a great opportunity to experience the local culture of Kanha's Gond and Baiga tribes.
