Aanavilasam is a plantation house set in seven acres of cardamom and pepper plantation but within easy access of Periyar Wildlife Reserve which is just fifteen minutes away. It is owned by Salim Pushpanath, an acclaimed photographer and publisher, although he isn’t always in residence. The property is managed by the lovely Pirkko whose warm, friendly manner and attention to detail are a real bonus. There are just six rooms, two Suites in the main house, two adjacent Private Pool Villas, a Deluxe Room and Presidential Suite which have an elevated position. Every room has a veranda or terrace with magnificent views of the estate. Inside, rooms are stylishly furnished, extremely comfortable and well equipped. The bathrooms in particular are very impressive. Our favourite rooms have a small outdoor private plunge pool and gorgeous views of the Western Ghats. Food is served in the main house and is freshly prepared using local produce – cooking demonstrations can be organised on request. Activities in the area include trekking and boating in Periyar Wildlife Reserve, elephant rides, bullock cart excursions, bird watching and village walks.
For a relaxed, comfortable stay in the midst of a plantation, but with easy access to Periyar Wildlife Reserve, Aanavilasam is a great option.
